Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim
“I am the man your father made me.”
"We will find a way to survive, and we will do it together."
“Don't you understand, this is all I have. Without vengeance I have nothing.”
-The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim
Revenge, what does it gain you, save the dissolution of who you once were. It is a parasite on the human person, an instrument of pain that affects you more than it affects the person you so desperately despise. Revenge is a liar. It disguises itself as strength. though in truth, it is little more than a distorted manifestation of despair.
If that is revenge. What is true strength? The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is strength personified. Yet it is not a strength that overpowers, it is a fortitude constructed out of its own willingness to protect. It is a natural outgrowth of this tale rather than a forced representation of resilience. From richly produced art to its methodical anime style, The War of the Rohirrim is the dichotomy between revenge and strength realized in captivating hand-drawn splendor. Hand-drawn animation at its best defies its 2-D origins, delivering three dimensions at its most compelling. It is no different here.
Maintaining the intricately layered tapestry that is the characters and tales of Tolkien's secondary world, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim brings the defining siege of Helm's Deep to life in a powerful way. Director Kenji Kamiyama and his team wonderfully reimagine the visual aesthetic of Middle Earth with Japan's intrinsic flair and style. Yet, they never forget Tolkien's abiding thematic core. Asking us the question: what does it take to survive, and how will that survival determine who you will become?
Rated PG-13 for strong violence.
I found The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim to be powerfully engaging, visually enthralling and thought-provoking. I hope in some way you do too.
