The Trouble with Angels 1966

"I'm not a child madam, I'm a midget with bad habits.”

“Brassieres Sister, brassieres.”

“I have a feeling we're going to get bounced.”

Perceptions, true or false, are what dictate our thought processes. It is surprising that most of our perceptions are misleading, because they are what we, you and I see. Yet they often do not tell us the whole story. They consistently do not give us a full picture of the reality that we think we know. Though perception does grant us something that the truth does not. It gives us the ability to ask questions to gain the truth that we might be missing.
The Trouble with Angels is one such film, it is a coming-of-age story about young women coming to terms with a Faith they thought they knew so well. It is a story of perception, and its transformation into reality. The film is a journey from the head to the heart, but not in the way you might think. It illustrates the joyful truth that our heart belongs with our reason, and should not be separated from it.
It may come as a surprise, but I'm burying the lead a bit here. The Trouble with Angels is a remarkably charming and funny film. It takes The prevalent conception of the life of a religious Sister. A life of asceticism with a strict adherence to rules, and turns it on its head. Giving us a window into a world filled with humanly eccentricity and pathos. A world filled with people not saints, one that is far closer to our own than you might think.
The Trouble with Angels effortlessly transcends its age. It stands the test of time because it is a heartfelt exploration of ever present realities and the misconceptions of the human experience. The film affixes itself to the door of an often overlooked way of life, and yanks it wide open with joy and nuance. This is all brought to vibrant life through extremely aware and quick witted humor.
Director Ida Lupino and her team have crafted something special here. Something that uses simplicity to its greatest degree, honesty. A honesty that opens the door to a real and refreshing glimpse into The Catholic faith, and what it means to understand all those we think are undecipherable.

Rated PG for mild thematic elements

I found The Trouble with Angels to be extraordinarily entertaining, funny, meaningful and thought-provoking. I hope in some way you do too.
