“You were born and fortune smiled, for you are a miracle child.”
When the animated musical comes to mind, the song that most commonly invades are thoughts is the song referred to as the "I want song”. The song that is occupying my nostalgic brain at the moment is "Part of Your World “ from Disney's The Little Mermaid as a prime example. These compositions propel the heroin or hero forward on their journey of discovery. They motivate the film's themes and often foreshadow the coming conflicts that are to be confronted.
What if your animation team decided not to go down this route? What if they decided they wanted to try something different at least in terms of this paradigm. Stick with me here, because that's exactly what DreamWorks animation seemed to do, when these Disney alumns were faced with these very questions.
From Prince of Egypt, to The Road to El Dorado DreamWorks converts the. "I want song" into the "I have song" with excellent success. With this approach, the filmmakers are not creating characters that long for something in the freedom or desire senses. Instead, the characters are in some ways expressing their flaws to the audience. These flaws are what the characters will have to overcome to become who they are supposed to be.
"You won't see me bent over double in darkness and rubble, where mountains of trouble are piled. I was destined to fly, watch me light up the sky. For I am a miracle child.”
Joseph King of Dreams, conveys the idea of the " I have song “. With a shocking amount of clarity. This is even more evident in this instance, because it is proclaimed out of the mouth of a biblical figure.
Too often we think of biblical figures, as just that, statues. Not the real people with flaws and problems that they were. I greatly appreciate how directors Rob DeLuca and Rob Ramirez are able to guide their team in the telling of a story that reflects us all.
God is not looking for us to be perfect people. In fact, our search for perfection often makes us arrogant and self-absorbed. What God wants is for us to realize that we cannot do it on our own. We need each other, and we need Him as much as he loves us.
I found Joseph King of Dreams to be enjoyable, thought provoking and meaningful. I hope in some way you do too.
