Waking Sleeping Beauty 2009
It is extremely difficult to distill the creative process into a few lines. When a person attempts to describe this process, they either demure it down into vague metaphors and trite sayings. On the opposite end of that spectrum, they often elevate it so high that it becomes a naval gazing exercise, rather than a meaningful exploration of creativity. In considering creativity we should first talk about life. Life, not in some abstract highfalutin way, but life in its connection with others. It is a process, a collaboration with others. It has its struggles for sure, though these bonds make us who we are and they allow us to grow if they are given the chance to do so. It is true, metaphors and trite sayings, they are inescapable. I think it suffices to say that in the creative process It takes a team.
Through these connections, creativity is allowed to flourish or fail. One individual is not responsible for any one triumph or failure. Instead, it is a coming together that dictates either outcome. This coming together is creativity. Writing is a process that most would consider to be a solitary endeavor. Even this however, is not when considered entirely true. The most singular of writers is as much a collaborator with his inspirations, as the film director is a collaborator with his or her crew.
The creative process has its pitfalls, it is however well worth the effort if only for the opportunity to share the end result with others. The 90s Disney animation renaissance is that belief shown out. Nothing is perfect. Don Hahn and the rest of the team behind the documentary Waking Sleeping Beauty reveals this fact. However, that unearthing also brings to light something else. A more prevalent truth…With every imperfection there is always a chance to find beauties with our beasts and many diamonds in the rough.
I found Waking Sleeping Beauty documentary, enjoyable, fascinating and insightful. I hope in some way you do too.
