Halt and Catch Fire 2014-2017
“Let me start by asking a question.“
It is difficult to encapsulate joy, but these words come pretty close in my mind, and probably not for reasons you may think. Endings are made better because of how they begin.
Halt and Catch Fire works as a fictionalized exploration of the technology boom in the early '80s and '90s. Not because it is exacting in its understanding of computers and technology, but because it is able to capture a feeling. The feeling of belonging. In other words, the connections that we gain when we realize where we belong. These connections are not arbitrary, they hopefully guide us down paths of understanding that help us be better than we ever thought we could be.
I say all that to say this, Halt and Catch Fire breathes life into a part of history not many people know about. If they do, they most likely take it for granted as I did. As with Friday Night Lights heartfelt exploration of High School football before it, Halt and Catch Fire opens an exhilarating window into the computer industry that you may not appreciate at first. In the end though, you may come to realize why so many people do.
Life is about connections and the people that are seeking them. This is a truism that this series strives for with great effect. Creators Christopher Cantwell and Christopher C. Rogers guide their team in this meaningful journey through the history of computers, and the culture they create. Asking us the question that we all, at some point ask ourselves. What are you searching for?
I found Halt and Catch Fire to be enjoyable, meaningful and thought-provoking. I hope in some way you do too.
