Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026)

Until Spider-Man: Brand New Day, I never really gave it much thought, the true cost of heroism. Sure, we all know the parameters, it's almost become routine at this point. “With great power, comes great responsibility”. I guess that is the benefit, if you can call them that, of our unasked for struggles. They force us to grow, to change and to realize that we cannot do this all on our own, heroism is never just a singular endeavor, it requires support, we cannot do it on our own. This may seem callous, but it's true, just because we have the ability to save someone's life, doesn't mean the weight of every life has to be on our shoulders.
Another truth arises from that point. When we measure our differences without support, they are isolating, aren't they? More often than not, we do not choose our differences for ourselves. Instead, they are seemingly handed to us, without any directions or perceivable guidelines of any sort. Are they gifts to lift us up or are they burdens to hold us down? Truthfully, it doesn't matter. All gifts, in some way or another, come with a cost. A cost that we need to account for, and decide how to bear its weight.
Sounds heavy doesn't it? Though that is the life of a superhero, and that is where we find Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This film is unique to be sure, and maybe its difference is the point. Brand New Day is at once, a thoughtful meditation on the difficulties of young adulthood, and a meaningful reminder of the importance of letting others share your burdens. I know. Believe me I know what you are thinking. This doesn't sound like a superhero film? Though, I assure you it is. This film, with almost undetectable skill and compassionate nuance, allows us entrance into Peter Parker's mind, after a life altering choice. One that makes him question the meaning and purpose of his alter ego of Spider-Man. Yet the film never loses its hopeful heart. This film is a measure of growth in a time of change and inner turmoil. Even still, Spidey's trademark humor is not far behind. So, do not worry, a brand new day will come. Though how, and for who? That is for you to decide.
Our focused mind can do many things. However it cannot lift every heavy weight off our shoulders. No, we must impart some of our struggles to others. To see how they may be able to aid us, trusting that they can succeed, even in places we couldn't before. Director Dustin Daniel Cretton and his team, meaningfully bring us back to the streets of New York City, and into the mind of Peter Parker. As he comes to terms with the heroic choices he made years before. We all grow, we all change and even superheroes must defeat their inner struggles, in order to gain the necessary knowledge to help others. At first glance, Spider-Man: Brand New Day may seem somber and grey, Though, may I offer this, as a way of reassurance. All grey days, however long they may be, hold the possibility of light and hope. And in this particular case, that hope is extraordinary.

Rated PG-13 for sequences of action/violence and some language

I found Spider-Man: Brand-New Day to be richly entertaining, thought-provoking and meaningful. I hope in some way you do too.
