Halo: Campaign Evolved (2026)

"Sleep well?”

"No thanks to your driving, but yes."

"So you did miss me."
-Halo: Campaign Evolved (2026)

It's surprising what names hold just below the surface, and what a person's life reveals in the recollection. We may think we have a person figured out until they offer us a completely new perspective. A new vantage point that allows us to witness them grow, change and show us an aspect of their personality that we never considered before. Yes, what is in the name? Better yet, in the case of Halo: Combat Evolved, what is beneath a helmet. In all honesty, that is where the truth resides. Beneath the helmet, and concealed by its name. Even still, over the years and through many iterations, Halo: Combat Evolved has conveyed a poignant reality about every sentient weapon of war. In its enigmatic and stalwart presence, the Halo franchise continually ponders the question of humanity, and the cost of its protection. This is true from the very beginnings, and it all started with a name.
Perhaps I’m giving far too much credit to the Microsoft marketing team and in turn, the Xbox general. Then again, maybe not, for isn't "evolution" the key? Whether a sales attractor or an intentional statement of forward momentum, Halo's subtitle “Combat Evolved” asks us, as the purchaser, to consider something deeper than what we see on the surface. This extends to Halo's narrative as well.
John 117, better known by his military rank, Master Chief, is far more than a soldier defined by battle. There is no doubt that he's a man of few words, though those words still echo a humanity of depth and purpose driven growth. That personal acceleration is enriched all the more by the AI counterpart tasked to join him on this metaphorical climb towards betterment. When it comes to Cortana, growth is an apt word, especially considering how she helps Chief to realize his capabilities and his dignity as a human being, not just a soldier.
It may not seem it at first, but therein lies the heart of Halo, an AI in collaboration with a human soldier, a mother son relationship that thematically balances out the realities of war, with the dignity of humanity. In a particular way, Cortana catalyzes a strength in Chief that he had not realized before. In other words, Halo: Combat Evolved, is Master Chief coming to terms with his own humanity. So that he has the capacity to recognize the dignity of humanity as a whole.
If you would permit me, let's return to the initiating question of this inquiry into the dossier of Master Chief, John 117. What do we find in a name? Ah. So that is Halo's legacy, the discovery of personhood, and the possibility of change in the midst of war. Halo: Combat Evolved endures, because it's a story that needs to be retold and continually remade to be understood. Now, isn't that the very nature of a ring?
The cycle of the ring then continues, with Halo Campaign Evolved. We all are familiar with the story, Master Chief and Cortana must discover the secrets of an ancient ring world, before the Covenant, a hostile alien alliance. What they all discover however, will change the course of warfare forever, asking the galaxy to confront the truth we may not be willing or ready to face. Are you? Put simply, in the wake of The Flood sentient life still remains. Though, can we realize that fact before it's too late? The development team at Halo Studios, have wonderfully taken up the torch once again from Halo series originators Bungie. To retell an ever evolving tale of warfare and hope, destruction and dignity. Indeed, Halo: Campaign Evolved remakes a powerful legacy and legend for a new generation. Recalling for us the circular nature war and its weapons. For good or ill, they are barometers of our humanity, and our ability to reach for the stars.

Rated M 17+ for Blood and Gore, Language, Violence

I found Halo: Campaign Evolved to be mechanically rich, thought-provoking and deeply meaningful. I hope in some way you do too.

Halo Campaign Evolved can be purchased digitally on Xbox Series S and X, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro, as well as on Windows PC.
