Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 (2024)
Healing is Yours to Write
“Every monster was once a man."
“I know you.”
“There is always a choice.”
I think it's fair to say, in the interactive space, if empathy had a revelatory moment in the modern era, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice would be a prime mover in that conversation. I would even suggest that a player's empathy is an essential element in understanding the impact and purpose of Senua's first steps towards healing and reclaiming her dignity as a loved and valued member of society. You may discover however, that Senua's journey through Helheim does not conclude on a note of healing, per se, but a removal of certain barriers towards that healing. That is to say, healing is a process, it does not do well with finite results.
Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2, could have very easily been derailed by its own ambitions. Destroyed by its attempts to reclaim the original 's empathetic spirit, and compassion for those who struggle with mental illness, and the traumas of generational pain. In all honesty, how could you not lessen the resounding impact of Senua's ever present voices entering your own mind? To grant you context, by way of binaural 3D audio, Senua's battles with her inner demons, almost literally, seep their way into your thoughts. It seems to me a foregone conclusion then, that a sequel would, by its nature, create a sense of banality to this empathetic exchange of mental awareness. Trivializing Senua’s voices to the point of thematic irrelevance. Thereby, using her inner turmoil as a rote game mechanic, rather than a richly engaged vehicle for compassion and comprehension, as it is in the first game.
It is said, in healing circles, that pain that is not transformed is transmitted. There lies the answer to What do we do with our pain, and how do we use it to help others heal? Senua's Saga overcomes its sequel redundancies by answering these very questions. Senua uses her painful past to help others realize the possibility of a future. She, of course, is still struggling with her own trauma. But, Senua comes to realize the need to step out of the darkness and into the light. The light of companionship and empathy for friends, as well as our enemies. Yes, even Senua’s enemies aid her in her quest towards self actualization and peace.
Often we hide away our pain because we believe our struggles are singular to our experience. Though, if we are willing to come alongside one another, we will realize that singularity hardly ever relates to pain. However, it often prolongs it. though, healing is not a simple nor fast process, and Senua's Saga beautifully takes that to heart. As Senua travels through Midgard, facing the Norse realm's most formidable giants, she discovers that the realities of pain lie not in our failures, but in our misconceptions. Healing, on the other hand, comes from our willingness to listen and embrace the struggles of others. So that we can find a path forward in our own uniquely personal journeys of life.
It may seem counter to the above remarks, but that is the wonderfully intricate tapestry that is Senua's Saga, Senua's personal choice to move forward. Whatever that forward momentum may bring. Game developer Ninja Theory brings us alongside Senua once again. To journey with her, through a tale of Nordic mythic mental anguish. All of which is compassionately rendered with hauntingly vibrant nuance, infused throughout every interactive pixel. Ultimately, conveying a resilient truth, every healing journey begins with a choice. A choice to break the cycle of pain and fear, or not. It is a choice that only, we or in this case, she can make. Our Saga is our own to write. In the end, no one else can write it for us.
