Hamnet (2025)

 Hamnet (2025)

“Don't be sad Hamnet, I shall be well.”

“I shall not. not without you."

“I'll be brave.”
-Hamnet (2025)

In all honesty, there aren't enough words to express the sheer poignancy of this film. Hamnet is an exercise in empathy to the most powerful degree. Though, even that phrase seems hollow and reductive in the face of the immense weight of sadness that pervades the thematic core of this beautiful parental tragedy. Hamnet abides in a place of waiting, a place where the terminus of grief seems eternally distant from its unlooked for start. However, time is your ally in these cycles of sorrow. At first, it may seem counter to the seeking after healing, though it is the traversal through this sadness that allows for the possibility of joy.
It is the passage of time that allows us to remember our heart, and its beating truth, love is born out of suffering and its return echoes its beginning. Hamnet poignantly holds all these human truths in its skillful hands. Bringing with it, the two-sided coin of creational earthly tragedy. The mournful sorrow of a mother and the helpless coping of a father. Yet hope remains, as it was at the start of a small life, so it shall be again, two shall be one.
As the death of Shakespeare's son may have very well brought forth one of the most influential plays, Hamnet defines Hamlet as an epoch of the artistic creative process. Revealing the inner world of an artist, and stating beautifully, that creativity is an innate avenue for healing and understanding. True history or feign, it matters not, Hamnet is an intimate mirror for the realities of grief, life and the reconnective power of memory and creation. Director Chloe Zhao and her team journey with us through the powerful nuances of grief. Offering at its pinnacle a playful, often unforeseen truth, joy can indeed be found at the end of a tragedy.

Rated PG-13 for thematic content, strong sexuality and, partial nudity

I found Hamnet to be visually enthralling, emotionally riveting and deeply meaningful. I hope in some way you do too.

Hamnet can be streamed on NBC Peacock with a subscription, it is also available to purchase on any digital video streaming service. Hamnet is available to purchase physically on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD disc.
