Wicked (2024 and 2025)
Wicked (2024 and 2025)
“What is going on? People are watching.”
“Don't we all know there's no place like home?”
“Because all that's required to live in a dream is endlessly closing your eyes.”
Wicked is at its core uniquely orchestrated to take advantage of all the dramatic nuances of the musical form. It is a story that calls into question perceptions and manipulations that evoke the most wily of propaganda tools. Though fret not, this backstage pass to the wonderful world of Oz, and the two witches that dominate its most iconic tale, is not seeking to deceive you, but to show you what it may look like beyond our preconceived notions. Therefore, Wicked seeks to find the realities that motivate trust and truth.
When taken as a whole, it really is an impressively moving achievement of the musical narrative form that Wicked resolves as beautifully and coherently as it does. Wicked inventively and innately comprehends its melodic power in relation to the ideas of propaganda and manipulation, it so effortlessly traverses. Though, these two film adaptations of Wicked never flaunt that power over you. Instead, they use it to examine the many false realities of deceit. All told, the many layered, character motivations, thematic through lines, and quite possibly, convoluted narrative occurrences are a feature of this musical cinematic extravaganza. Not a failure. It may not seem like it at first, though that's the point. Eventually, all these disparate elements sing with a beautifully unified voice.
Witnessing Wicked is an enthralling and enriching experience that captivates from start to finish. I have yet to see the stage play on which these two films are based. Though, in this case, I doubt a comparison would be warranted or beneficial. This story stands on its own. These films, in particular, stand as a reminder of the capacity and depth on offer in a well executed cinematic blockbuster experience
Crowd pleasing wonder, is assuredly a suitable superlative to grant these cinematic endeavors. Though that title in no way downgrades their thematic impact. Certainly, Wicked never fails to excavate its thematic core. The search for truth and friendship, in a world full of deceit and mistrust. Indeed, The story of Glinda and Elphaba is a prime example of friendship at the height and splendor of its interpersonal purpose. Director Jon M. Chu and his team exuberantly burst open The doors of Oz. To remind us that we all have the capacity to be changed for the better… or should I say, “Changed for Good.”
Wicked: Part 1 (2024) Rated PG for some scary action, thematic material and brief suggestive material.
Wicked: For Good (2025) Rated PG for action/violence, some suggestive material and thematic material
I found Wicked: Part 1 and Wicked: For Good to be musically thought-provoking, visually enthralling and enormously entertaining. I hope in some way you do too.
Wicked: Part 1 and Wicked: For Good can be streamed on NBC Peacock with a subscription, the films can also be purchased on any digital video streaming service. They can be purchased physically on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD disc.
