“Why do you keep trusting me?"

“Because I believe we are more than our pain.

“The time has come to rebuild."
-Tomb Raider: The Legend Of Lara Croft, season 2

What are the masks we hide behind? What are the realities we seek to accommodate by granting anonymity in our minds to the corresponding pain. Hiding pain behind masks ultimately creates more pain, and disconnects us from the avenues of healing and connection that bring us truer understanding and fulfillment. Contentment lies in the realization that we are broken human beings in need of reconciliation. If we are able to come to terms with the scars of our past, they can often be redirected, redefined by healing, and turned into a hope for the future.
I can't precisely tell you why, but the nuances of simple stories consistently surprises me with their richness and depth. Though, now that I think about it, that surprise and delight may come from the fact that simplicity allows for a greater appreciation by a wider percentage of a story's narrative reach. However, that doesn't mean the story's narrative and thematic core is necessarily doled down to accommodate a wider audience. Simplicity just means that a story has more of an opportunity to be eloquently told, and more impactfully understood if executed correctly.
Then it seems by design that the simplicity of the second season of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft is an asset, not a detriment. As always, Lara Croft and her globetrotting, mystery solving excavation of tombs is the beating heart of this animated series. With charm and enthusiastic resolve Lara Croft once again demonstrates why she is considered to be one of the best in the field of archaeology. Using voodoo mysticism as its cultural backdrop, this season of the series unmasks its central mysteries with a sense of emotional weight and an adventurous spirit.
Adventure may be the name of the game here. However, with Lara Croft involved, family and all its varied aspects is not far behind in the unearthing. Perhaps that is where the Tomb Raider franchise finds its simplistic eloquence. The adventures of Lara Croft are the connective tissue between the thrill of the find, and the depth of the human condition. Showrunner Tasha Huo and her team once again meaningfully tackle the Legend of Lara Croft. Allowing us to consider the masks that hide us away from the world. Though, in their own way these masks may unintentionally help us to discover the family we never knew we had. In their turn, this family will help us to see that we are far more than just our scars.

Rated TV-14 for violence and language

I found season 2 of Tomb Raider The Legend of Lara Croft to be charmingly entertaining, visually engaging and meaningful. I hope in some way you do too.

Tomb Raider the Legend of Lara Croft season 2 can be streamed on Netflix with a subscription.
