Possibility, possibility is what exists at the heart of Project Hail Mary. It is a film defined by chance, and revealed through discovery. The film's joys are brought on by the knowledge that we all have the capacity to to grow, change and come to the realization that our worth is not defined by what we think we can do, but by the chances we are given to overcome our fears of inadequacy and self-doubt. For Ryland Grace that journey towards self-worth contains within it more than the average person however. It is nothing less than the determining factor of Earth's survival.
Still, his acceleration towards confidence is not only measured by galactic import, but also, by the intimacy of human inadequacy. Ryland Grace, and his sojourn in the wilds outer space demonstrates a simplicity that echoes the nuanced struggles of life. In other words, Ryland is in no way prepared for the mission on which he is sent. However, that does not mean that his task is beyond his reach. As a film, Project Hail Mary exists within that space, the distance between failure and success, possibility and chance, belief and faith. When it comes to it, this cinematic experience is a microcosm of belief in oneself and the God-given worth we are innately given. This is true no matter the outcome, failure or future.
Project Hail Mary, and by extension Ryland Grace’s self-actualization as an extraterrestrial pioneer, challenges the dichotomy between strength and heart to a powerfully delightful degree. That is to say that, in its theming and structural nuance, this film gives a l voice to the disconnect between perception and the ability of disability. In our own particular way, we all must be given a chance to succeed, even if it is an insurmountable task by nature of our present aptitudes. To distill it down to its essence, failure is 100% guaranteed if we're never given the chance to try.
You may be under the impression that Project Hail Mary contains no gravitational defying feats of levity in its spatially challenged endeavors, though worrying not. Delightfully, Project Hail Mary is a film filled with wit and joy from end to end. So much so that its charm is almost irresistible at points. It is in effervescent charm that Project Hail Mary is able to effectively channel the ever present expense of galactic splendor, and cinematic spectacle. All the while offering us an intimate look at the fortitude of the human spirit. Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller along with their team, grant us a poignant glimpse at the human capacity to succeed even in the midst of tremendous doubt. Showing us that living on a prayer is not a mistaken shot in the dark. Rather, it is the anticipation of hope and the possibility of meaningful, life-sustaining change.
