Sing, and remember the epic of the heart, words spoken and unspoken, truths told and lies revealed. This is story, this is The Odyssey. Truth for a truth, the 2026 retelling of The Odyssey is the very idea of story, encapsulated in one of its most refined forms. This Homeric epic bears upon its shoulders the nature of mythmaking, and the capacity of truth and lie. Odysseus’s journey home is many things, though most of all it is a desire for reconnection amidst a fight for wholeness and truth.
This visual oration of The Odyssey seeks that truth through the interconnected structure of different oral storytellers and perspectives that all eventually converge to reveal a marvelous whole. This film is the Homeric structure come to life in a way that has not been experienced for thousands of years. That is to say, this film takes to heart the belief that the Odyssey was not constructed by a singular individual, but by the progression of time and the continual proclamation of this mythic tale by many voices. It should be noted however, that this film never suggests that the Odyssey has ever lost its central truth over time, only that Odysseus's path to reconnection has grown more relevant and truthful over the centuries since its first intoning as song and rhyme. This film then, is not a marker of a loss of tradition and heroism, but a holistic reminder of their importance.
As a cinematic expedition of wonder and myth, the Odyssey (2026) is a tremendous visual excavation of the power and purpose of the moving image. It seems nothing here is by chance, as it relates to story and theme, the nature of the medium of film is on full display. It could very well be argued that, in this modern era, film has not yet conveyed the true vastness and splendor of mythic antiquity. If that is so, that marker has now been reached with this retelling of The Odyssey. Director Christopher Nolan and his team open our eyes once again to the power and majesty of myth. Revealing in the process, the nature of human connection, and our need to face our failures, in order to reclaim our rightful legacy and the truth of who we are supposed to be. In the end, as long as we are on this side of eternity, our own odysseys are far from over. In fact, we've only just begun….
