"You have been indoctrinated since you were a child. Now, you must adapt.”"It's all right, it's all right. I won't let him do this to anybody else.”
“Fear is natural, we just can't allow it to control us.”
-Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord, season 1 (2026)
Pain that is not transformed is transmitted. Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord is a driving echo of this sad truth. If we are unable to confront our trauma, we often give it to others unwittingly, even when our deepest hope is that our pain ends with us. Maul - Shadow Lord is a poignant reminder that revenge only amplifies our mental anguish. It does not rid us of it. In his attempts to keep at bay his inner demons, Maul actually fortifies them, giving them space to occupy a prime place in his mind.
Outwardly Maul's ultimate goal of vanquishing his former master, Darth Sidious, is admirable. Though, revenge, however justified, only keeps the door open. Inexorably leading to more psychological and physical turmoil. All of this speaks of Maul as a singular combatant. More precisely, his myopic vendetta against the system that has wronged him. However, as I suggested earlier, nothing we do on this temporal plane of existence is truly our own. We all affect those around us, even if we don't intend to.
Here, this series truly comes into focus, and thematically depicts the true nature of evil. Evil cannot create. It can only pervert the clay of the maker. Maul's pursuit of Devon and her Jedi abilities, is not an act of benevolence, on behalf of his desire to cleanse the galaxy of the dark side. It is, instead, a continuation of his own trauma, That occurred under the tutelage of his former tormentor. A "teacher", who had disguised himself as a necessary step in the path of enlightenment. Interiorly, Maul: Shadow Lord reiterates the cycle of abuse, brought on by Darth Sidious, over and over again with great effect. This pattern is a marker of the encroachment of the dark side of The Force, which this animated series inaugurates with methodical purpose. To that fact, I do believe Maul - Shadow Lord is the first time we have witnessed a planet's dissent into the darkness of an Imperial occupation. That is, it could well be the first instance, in the animated realm where we feel the occupation's weight. The Imperial war machine is presented here as a manifestation of impending evil, not an obstruction to overcome.
From an artistic standpoint, Maul - Shadow Lord is drenched in somber grays and inky blacks. It is the illustrative oppression of evil, at its most emblematic and striking. Yet, it never becomes heavy-handed. Thankfully, this darkened atmosphere remains beneficial for expressing the inner turmoil and struggles of Devon, Maul and the Lawson family, as they attempt to escape Imperial influence, and the pull of the dark side. Showrunners, Dave Filoni and Matt Michnovetz, along with their team explore the suffocating nature of evil. Revealing a poignantly sorrowful truth, vengeance only begets more pain, it does not heal it. In the end - vengeance is a lie - in which we become a shadow of the very evil we once sought to destroy.
Rated TV-PG for sci-fi action violence and intense thematic elements.
I found Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord, season 1 to be visually enthralling, thematically rich and meaningful. I hope in some way you do too.
