The Wild Robot: And The Growth of Motherhood
“No one does, we just make it up"
“Goodbye, we like your new baby, hope it doesn't die.”
-The Wild Robot (2024)
When it comes to it, perhaps that is why The Wild Robot is such a wonderfully engaged expression of the dignity of motherhood. With a sense of effervescent charm and humor, The Wild Robot paints a picture of parenthood in such a way that allows you to realize that parenthood is as much a state of growth, as childhood . Roz, as a robot, is growing into her motherhood and evolving as much as Brightbill is growing into being her son. Their mother son relationship is not defined by a sense of parental superiority, but by a mutual process of growth and understanding. Both are on their own journeys, but those journeys could not have started without one another. By its nature, this exchange is meant to go out into the wild, to affect it, in hopefully positive ways. You see, growth is not a one-way street. It is a river with tributaries branching off in a multitude of directions, giving life to a vast population of people.
The Wild Robot is a film about motherhood in its most intimate and loving forms, that is to say, it continually scales upward and doesn't stay static. Encompassing all of parenthood’s frustrations and uncertainties. Though, in all that hustle and bustle it has its meaning as well? Here's just an honest guess, parenthood's greatest meaning comes from the love a parent has for their child. And with love Hope is not far behind. Hope in the future and our loved ones ability to fly, to reach for the sky and accomplish great things. Indeed, it wouldn't be great if those accomplishments could help others achieve greatness as well?
That is the sheer wonder and influence of the mother. In affecting one life, a mother affects the world entire. Director Chris Sanders and his team. beautifully paint the wild landscapes of motherhood. Offering richly realized forests and entertainingly delightful portraits of love and connection. In its own unique way, The Wild Robot defies its logistical programming. Bringing us to the realization that it is our differences that ultimately allow us to understand our similarities.
Happy upcoming Mother's Day week.
Rated PG for action/peril and thematic elements.
