Skeleton Crew Season 1 Part 2: This Is Why We Do What We Do
“Son, you are talking to a level 7 systems coordinator, get the bike. “
“Everywhere we went, even the worst places. There were good people too, people that can help us. You have to trust me.”
“Did we win? “
-Star Wars Skeleton Crew season 1
Joy, that is how I would describe Star Wars Skeleton Crew season 1. The show is pure joy. Skeleton Crew encapsulates the core of Star Wars, Its metaphorical beating heart. Though the show Isn't so much a love letter to Star Wars, as it is a reminder of what Star Wars means to so many.
I don't know how Lucasfilm does it. Honestly, I don't want to know because that would rob the story of its magic. Perhaps that is the truth, The reality that is missing from the world today. A sense of magic. Nowadays it is so easy to criticize and argue in the realms of story and intent. The constant dilemma of, why did they do that or they should've done this. This push and pull happens so often that we forget the magic that is occurring right in front of our faces, the story that is being told. Star Wars Skeleton Crew however, exuberantly challenges that critical haze with childlike delight and wonder. it simultaneously brings Star Wars back to life while reminding us that it had never died in the first place.
The adventures of Wim, Fern, KB and Neel are joyous subversions of the modern perception of Star Wars. That of the monetary behemoth hell-bent on dominating us all or the nostalgia puppet master, solely designed to manipulate us down to our core. Though, showrunners Christopher Ford and Jon Watts with their team show us the true purpose of the core. Not to control, but to convey their creative hearts. Star Wars is not about money, lightsabers or the Force. It is about hope, friendship and our journey to be better. That is why Star Wars Skeleton Crew season 1 is such a meaningful statement of creative intent. In a sense this show is the entire Lucasfilm and Disney creative team saying, you may think we do this solely for the money. However, that is not true. This show is why we do what we do.
Rated TV-PG Moderate violence
I found season 1 of Star Wars Skeleton Crew to be exhilaratingly entertaining, charming and deeply meaningful. I hope in some way you do too.
