Shadowlands 1993

“So Jack, have you ever been really hurt?

“You don't give up, do you?”

“I have been really hurt, you know? The first time is always the worst. That is when my mother died."

“The pain now is part of the happiness, that's the deal.”

-Shadowlands

What opens us up to life? What brings us to a fuller understanding of ourselves? These are the questions we all must ponder in time. Yet, we consistently try to elude their penetrating gaze. We do this because the pain these questions often call to mind is too difficult to bear. Though that is what life is, is it not? Pain mingled with joy, the ever present reminder that we are human.
At first glance, Shadowlands may not be what you expect out of a film chronicling the life of C.S. Lewis, but it is precisely what it needs to be. The film is certainly not, C.S. Lewis a life retold moment by moment and fact by fact. No, Shadowlands is something more poignant and varied than that. As with all biographical endeavors it strives to enliven the facts of a life by bringing them into three dimensions. Contextualizing The facts into a full-fledged lived experience, enriched by emotion and human struggle.
Shadowlands, is at once a metaphorical, factual and narrative exploration of the life and works of C.S. Lewis. It is an eloquently crafted conversation between C.S. Lewis author and Christian apologist and C.S. Lewis, a grief stricken man dealing with life, love and sorrow. Director Richard Attenborough and his team skillfully navigate these intricate viewpoints of perception and humanity. Bringing to light a Clive Staples Lewis that is driven by faith, but challenged by human nature and experience. In other words, a Lewis molded by the human condition. We all must enter the shadowlands at some point in our lives to face sorrow and pain, it is inevitable. Though, in emerging from those shadows, we are more often than not changed for the better.

Rated PG for thematic elements

I found Shadowlands to be deeply meaningful, thought-provoking and thematically rich. I hope in some way you do too.

Shadowlands can be purchased digitally on any digital video streaming service, such as Amazon Prime Video. It is also available physically on DVD and Blu-ray disc.
