The Gorge 2025

 The Gorge

”If you are lonely when alone, you are in bad company.”

“Everything is a dangerous drug except reality, which is unendurable.”

“You bury enough secrets, the graveyard runs out of room.”

“Three things cannot be long hidden, the sun, the moon and the truth.”
-The Gorge

Silence, it is one of those rare instances that can be both peaceful and full of fear in the same moment. In today's world silence is seemingly a luxury that we can't afford. Though, as I think about it, It may be more honest to say that silence is a luxury that we often disregard because it makes us face our deepest fears. Perhaps The greatest barrier to assuaging these fears is believing that we have to face them on our own. Though, that is simply not true. There is always help out there. We just need to know where to look.
The Gorge is simply unique in how it approaches this idea of facing our inner demons. The tale of two military snipers keeping guard over a mysterious gorge is a lesson in the power of metaphor and human connection. The film is largely silent in its first hour. Though this silence is a reminder that if we allow ourselves the time for contemplation we may find that it holds healing as well. Juxtaposing the silence found in the sniper kill with that of keeping watch over the gorge, our two protagonists come to realize that silence holds both life and death in its grasp. This film rather effectively illustrates the need for simplicity in the journey towards the truth of ourselves and the world around us. Director Scott Derrickson and his team allow us to repel into the depths of introspection. To discover a truth about our connective humanity, and the monsters that are often created when we forget that fact.

Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, brief strong language, some suggestive material and thematic elements

I found The Gorge to be inventive, insightful and thought-provoking. I hope in some way you do too.

The Gorge can be streamed on Apple TV Plus with a subscription.
